Zoom the photo to place marks precisely: scroll or pinch over it, or use the − / + buttons on the mat. Drag to pan when zoomed, and press 0 for Fit.

2 Required drawing size

The finished size you want the artwork to be. Give one side and the other follows the reference's proportions; give both and the drawing is fitted inside that box.

Grid square — optional

Leave blank for eight squares across the drawing.

Portrait landmarks optional

For heads and figures: mark the hairline, chin and both eyes to lay centre and eye-line guides over the reference, and read back the head height your chosen size gives you.

The canvas steps from the photo to a line sketch, then blocks the values in one band at a time, darkest first. Arrow keys step too.
